New evacuation orders have been issued for new areas of Los Angeles after the largest wildfires moved in a different direction.
Reports Friday night that the Palisades fire on the city’s western edge was heading in a new direction prompted new evacuation orders for much of the Brentwood area and the foothills of the San Fernando Valley.
The Palisade fire continues to move northeast with new explosions in the eastern part of the city, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Eric Scott told local station KTLA. LA Times Website.
The evacuation came after California Gov. Gavin Newsom called for an investigation into the county’s hydrants and other water issues.
Earlier this week, it was reported that some fire hydrants in Palisade were unusable and reservoir water was unavailable, compromising efforts to protect homes. Newsom has asked county officials to look into the matter and write a report.
There are six active large wildfires burning across Los Angeles County. The Palisades and Eaton fires are the most destructive fires in state history. The Palisades Fire is 11% contained as of Saturday morning and the Eaton Fire is 15% contained.
At least 11 people have died as authorities continue to battle the blaze.

World Central Kitchen Helps Firefighters in Los Angeles
Chef Jose Andreas’ World Central Kitchen non-profit is supporting firefighters as they continue to battle wildfires in Los Angeles.
“This is as destructive as you can see. We’ve seen fires like this before,” Andres said in a video posted on X.
World Central Kitchen volunteers help provide food during disasters around the world.
He implored the federal government to help fire victims rebuild and the public not to forget those affected in the fire’s aftermath.
“We have to make sure that when the cameras are off and we are in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we forget these events, we cannot forget people,” he said.

Matthew Perry dies after being rescued by neighbors after fire at his Los Angeles home in Palisades
The Pacific Palisades home where Matthew Perry tragically died of a ketamine overdose in 2023 miraculously survived the devastating wildfires that swept through the city of Los Angeles.
The four-bedroom, four-bathroom property in an affluent coastal neighborhood west of Los Angeles survived the devastating Palisade Fire, which burned more than 22,661 acres, the home’s new owner confirmed on Instagram.

California governor doubles National Guard presence in LA as wildfires continue to rage
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Saturday that he would double the number of National Guard troops deployed to the Los Angeles area.
A total of 1,680 National Guard troops will be deployed to the region “to help fight the Los Angeles fires” and maintain order in affected communities.
“We are grateful for their continued courage and dedication to serving others,” he said in a statement Saturday.

What we know so far about the people who died in the LA fires
Anthony and Justin Mitchell Anthony Mitchell and his son Justin reportedly died in Altadena as a result of the Eaton fire. One of the 67-year-old’s children, Justin, suffers from cerebral palsy and cannot walk. Anthony Mitchell was an amputee and used a wheelchair to get around.
His son, named Anthony, told NBC News that his father could have escaped from the house on his own, but would never have left his son Justin alone.
The father was found dead next to Justin’s bed. Justin also died in the fire.
Kelly decided not to evacuate when the Eaton fire closed in on her home in Altadena. She died when her home caught fire Thursday evening.
Shaw decided to stay behind and attempt to extinguish the fire at the Altadena home. He was found dead just outside his home with a garden shed in his hands.
Nickerson’s daughter told KCAL her father would be okay and Chsoe told her to stay at his home in Altadena. She last heard from him when he was spraying water around his property as the Eaton Fire neared.
Sykes, a former Australian child star, died before being rescued while living at his mother’s holiday home in Malibu. The cabin caught fire and his mother was unable to reach him before the building was engulfed in flames.
Sykes suffers from cerebral palsy and was unable to evacuate the cabin.

Texas sends resources to support California wildfire fighting efforts.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Saturday that he would deploy fire resources to support fire response efforts in California.
According to a Texas press release, the state will send more than 135 firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, as well as 45 vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, command vehicles and equipment.
“Texans know all too well the devastation wildfires can bring to our communities, and our country is stronger when we come together in times of crisis,” Abbott said in a statement.

‘My whole city is gone’: As evacuations are lifted, LA residents return to their homes and are left with nothing.
Los Angeles area residents are returning home to find nothing but ash and debris as wildfires sweep through Southern California.

Former child star dies in California wildfires at age 32
British-born former child actor Rory Callum Sykes died in the wildfires that swept through California this week.
Sykes appeared in Australian TV series Kiddy CapersHe was at his family home in Malibu when he died at age 32.
The news was announced via X/Twitter by his mother, Shelley Sykes, who also appeared on the 1998 reality series.

Pope Francis prays for California wildfire victims
The Vatican said in a statement that Pope Francis offered his “heartfelt prayers” to the victims of the Los Angeles wildfires.
“Pope Francis, saddened by the loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the fires near Los Angeles, assures you of his spiritual closeness to you and the communities affected by this tragedy,” the statement said.
The Pope then said he was praying “for the relief efforts of emergency workers.”

Over 50,000 people lose power due to wildfire in LA
As of this morning, about 50,000 power customers in Southern California are in the dark, according to PowerOutage.us.
Wildfires in the area have left power to an estimated 47,998 homes and businesses in the Los Angeles area. About half of the outages affected Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers and the other half affected Southern California Edison customers, according to the data.
