LG updates Gram laptop line ahead of CES 2025

LG’s Gram laptop is back for another update ahead of CES 2025. After a decade of thin and light lineups in LG’s portfolio, the latest model is equipped with AI (surprise!) and improves performance while maintaining its trademark portability.

CES will see the launch of four new models, including two variants of the Gram Pro, the new Gram Pro 2-in-1 and the entry-level Gram Book. The first version of the Gram Pro has Intel Core H-series (Arrow Lake) processors built in for more traditional laptop tasks (including some games). The second model uses Intel Core Ultra V series (Lunar Lake) chips for AI tasks. The latter is Microsoft Copilot+ PC, which features all the AI features you’d expect from that product line, including Recall, Live Captions, Cocreator, and Windows Studio Effects.

Even if you don’t opt for the Copilot+ variant, you’ll still get LG’s AI features on most of the new models (all but the Gram Book). This falls into two camps: on-device AI tasks and cloud-processed AI tasks. On-device features include a scaled-down chatbot derived from LG’s EXAONE large language model. It also adds LG’s Time Travel, a feature similar to Microsoft’s Recall that can recall web pages, documents, videos, and audio files you’ve visited or used. It’s unclear whether and how LG’s version will avoid the privacy issues Microsoft suffered with its recall.

Cloud-based AI capabilities include Gram Chat Cloud, a more powerful chatbot (based on GPT-4o) that can integrate with calendar and email services.

The Gram Pro has a 17-inch (Arrow Lake) or 16-inch (Lunar Lake) screen and a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD screen. The variable refresh rate maxes out at 144Hz. Both models feature up to 32GB of RAM (LPDDR5X up to 8,400MHz, dual channel) and 2TB of storage.

The Arrow Lake models should make for a solid gaming laptop with RTX 4050 graphics. AI/Lunar Lake models only integrate Intel graphics. But at least the latter is lighter and thinner, weighing 2.73 pounds. That compares to 3.26 pounds for the Arrow Lake model.

LG Electronics won the CES 2025 Innovation Award for its latest Gram Pro 2-in-1. The top configuration has a 16-inch screen with a 2,880 x 1,800 OLED display (120Hz variable refresh rate). The cheaper variant is limited to a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD (144Hz VRR). The 2-in-1 comes with a wireless charging stylus and, as the name suggests, can be folded back into tablet mode.

Lastly, the Grambook is an entry-level model launched by LG “to expand its presence in the U.S. market.” The screen is a 1,920 x 1,080 15.6-inch LCD running at just 60Hz. It’s the least performant of the lot, combining an Intel Core i5 CPU with integrated Intel graphics and up to 16GB of RAM. It is also the heaviest at 3.75 pounds.

Unfortunately, we don’t know how “elementary level” it is. LG has yet to announce pricing information (or release date) for the new laptop.
