Lisandro Martinez named in Copa America Team of the Tournament as Argentina’s defensive hero – Man Utd News & Transfer News

Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez has been named in the Copa America Team of the Tournament for his heroics in the competition.

Martinez played a key role in Argentina’s record-breaking 16th Copa America trophy following their success at the 2022 World Cup.

Albiceleste won the title after beating Colombia 1-0 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, USA, on Sunday.

Martinez has been included in Lionel Scaloni’s final squad for the Copa America, despite making just 14 appearances for United in all competitions in 2023/24.

The 26-year-old did not disappoint, forming a formidable partnership at the heart of the Albiceleste’s backline, particularly alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Romero.

Martinez started the final against Colombia and played the full 120 minutes, his highlight being a stunning last-minute tackle to prevent Miguel Borja from knocking down Emi Martinez’s goal.

There was an incident during the match where Colombian striker John Cordoba had to be treated by a physiotherapist after he was caught as he attempted to deliver a cross.

Martinez’s left foot was examined by a medical professional, but fortunately it has recovered and does not appear to be a serious injury.

Argentina did not concede a goal while Martinez was on the pitch throughout the tournament.

Argentina only conceded a goal against Ecuador, but Martinez was not on the pitch at the time. He had already been replaced by Scaloni.

The centre-back’s performances earned him a spot in the Copa América squad, where he was part of a defensive quartet that included Nicolás Tagliafico, Davinson Sánchez and Santiago Arias.

Martinez will be fully focused on returning to United in top condition soon after the break.
