Manchester United is expected to beat Barcelona in the race to sign Alvaro Carreras.

The Spain U21 international has enjoyed a comeback over the past 12 months. Earlier this year, United showed little faith in his talent by sending him on loan to Benfica, giving the Portuguese club an option to sign him permanently for a meager fee of around €6m.

At Benfica, Carreras quickly impressed club bosses, who exercised their option. Moreover, he has now cemented his place in Bruno Raji’s starting line-up.

Peoples Person recently passed along a report detailing the former United star’s development. “…the Spanish left-back has become fundamental in both attack and defense and is the biggest achievement of the Benfica manager’s personal transformation.”

The change appears to have sparked a transfer war between Europe’s top teams for his services.

Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid are monitoring Alvaro Carreras.

According to A Bola (via) sports witness), Benfica must take the Barca-Real Madrid link very seriously. Because the two Spanish powerhouses will continue to go after the left-back.

The Portuguese newspaper also warned the Catalan side of the threat from United, who have been strongly linked with a move for the former academy star.

Former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim is said to have known the player since his days in Portugal.

Furthermore, United look set to crush Barca in the race to sign the 21-year-old and are believed to be more likely to return to Old Trafford at this stage.

The Mancunians are considered to be in the driver’s seat as they have a €20m buyback clause. Meanwhile, other suitors will have to shell out a fee of around €50 million to secure the Benfica star’s signature.

Amid concerns over the fitness of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malasia, United must try to make the most of this advantage.

Carreras’ creative instincts make him suitable for the left wing-back role in Amorim’s 3-4-3 format.
