Viv Richards was impressed by Rohit Sharma’s dominance. Even the great Viv Richards was in awe of Indian captain Rohit Sharma after a match in which he displayed his incredible batting ability. Sharma attacked the Australian bowling so ferociously that the great batsman had to give him a standing ovation.

The Legend of Viv Richards

There are few batsmen today who have the same aura as the legendary Viv Richards. ODI cricket was pioneered by Richards, the original Master Blaster. Richards scored 184 in an ODI against England in 1984, when the daddy century was in vogue. It was the highest individual score by a West Indies player until Chris Gayle broke the record with a double century in 2015. It was Richards’s influence. The opposition’s strategy was to “get Richards cheap and win the game”. He was so good. If Richards had been the only one dismissed by Kapil Dev in the 1983 World Cup final, his famous run-behind catch would not have been so memorable.

Richards remains the second highest individual run scorer for West Indies in One Day Internationals (ODIs) 40 years later. In fact, Richards scored another incredible century against Sri Lanka in the 1987 World Cup, which was the last of his career. So for someone like Richards to be noticed, it is essential that a player does something particularly remarkable.

Viv recalls Rohit’s knock

Rohit came to bat that morning in St Lucia like a man possessed. Rohit used all his anger over Australia’s defeat of India in the 2023 World Cup final to get revenge. He faced Mitchell Starc and slammed the quick Australian for 29 runs in one over, including four sixes, before adding a fifth in the next. All things considered, Rohit played the best innings of his life, hitting as many as eight sixes. All his sixes since November 19 have been tinged with a bit of agony. One could argue that Rohit’s innings was the best in the T20 World Cup and a big factor in Australia’s exit from the competition.

“We always knew that if they could beat Australia, no team could stop them. Watching the game against Australia, it seemed like Rohit Sharma took it personally,” Richards said.

Richards also entered the Indian dressing room after one of the matches and wished them well. “If there is one team after West Indies that I want to see win this World Cup, it is you guys,” he said, and the Indian team got their wish.
