Mats Hummels joins Ranieri as Roma’s defensive leader

Claudio Ranieri is determined to turn things around by signing Mats Hummels.

The Italian technician was asked at a press conference whether he would give Hummels a chance as opposed to Juric’s treatment of the German defender, to which Ranieri replied: “Why not?”

According to La Gazzetta dello SportRanieri focused a lot on the defensive line and stability during his first three days of training at Trigoria.

As Ranieri revealed in his press conference, Angelino will no longer have such extensive defensive duties.

Moreover, teams will no longer rely on a high backline to avoid unnecessary risks.

Ranieri will rely on low blocks and short distances between the defense and midfield. At Naples, Ranieri will probably start in a three-man defence.

However, it will be a different defense in terms of concept and dynamics, with more attention paid to marking, positioning and line holding.

And the players will also change.

We start with Mats Hummels, who could be a big novelty for Maradona in Naples.

The newspaper wrote that Hummels could become the team’s defensive leader under Ranieri.

As a result, Ndika will have to play left of center again.
