Meta’s Orion smart glasses resemble the future of AR

Meta’s most impressive new product, codenamed Orion smart glasses, is not available for purchase. You may be able to buy something similar in a few years, but most of us will never get to the point where we can afford to wear something like that. That doesn’t necessarily make it any less impressive or important. Orion is Meta’s stated purpose: AR glasses are indeed the future and we will get there eventually.

The trigger for all this news was Meta Connect, so let’s take a look at all the other announcements from Connect as well. There are new smart glasses, a new VR headset, a new celebrity AI to replace the existing one, a voice mode, and more. But to be honest, we mainly talk about Orion. It’s vaporware, a science project, a prototype, a future beyond doubt, or somewhere in the center of the Venn diagram of all of these. And the fact that they exist says a lot about where we are in technological advancement.
