Exclusive Interview — For U.S. law enforcement, today’s threat environment may be more challenging, complex, and dynamic than ever before. The terrorist threat remains high, and senior U.S. intelligence officials say it has been made worse by Israel’s long war in the Gaza Strip and the toll on civilians there. But officials said they were also on high alert against violent extremist groups on the home front.

And state-sponsored actors, such as authoritarian regimes including China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea, have targeted the United States and its allies through traditional espionage, influence peddling, and the illicit acquisition of sensitive Western technology. And in this fraught home of America’s election campaign, America’s enemies are also working to interfere and influence domestic American politics, spreading misinformation and propaganda to sow division and discord. These operations are increasingly enhanced by the use of artificial intelligence and traditional malicious cyber activities.
