I have written quite a few natural hair care articles over the years. Recipes like nourishing conditioners and herbal hair treatments for healthy hair. But healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. This hair growth oil nourishes the scalp and is great for anyone who is experiencing hair loss and damage.
This recipe was originally written for men who may notice their hair thinning as they age. However, many women are also looking for hair products to address hair health. Over-styling, tight hairstyles (like tight braids), heat styling tools, thyroid problems, androgenetic alopecia, and pregnancy can all contribute to hair loss.
More than half of women experience hair loss at some point. You may not have thinning hair, but you may want to grow it longer.
I started experimenting with natural ways to promote hair regrowth after pregnancy. I realized that this hair growth oil is equally effective for men who want to avoid hair loss. If you or anyone else is finding that your hair isn’t as thick as it used to be, the good news is that there are natural options.
Promotes healthy hair growth
As with everything else, the foundation of healthy hair is a healthy diet. Nutrients like biotin and collagen help keep all types of hair healthy and strong. Experts recommend: Focus on B vitamins, vitamin C (used to produce collagen), omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins D and A.
And if you’re lacking iron, that can play a role, too. Iron is needed for healthy blood flow to the hair follicles. I try to get as much of the nutrient from whole grains as possible, but supplements can help fill in the gaps. Getting enough of the nutrient can help reduce hair breakage, receding hairlines, and split ends.
Water and minerals are also really important. If you have dry, frizzy hair or a dry scalp, you may need to drink more water. You can read the recipe for a hydrating mineral drink here.
Oil Treatment for Hair Growth
If your locks need a little extra TLC, a natural scalp treatment may work. There are a variety of natural oils that promote quick and easy hair growth. Popular options include almond oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. If you have alopecia, vitamin E can help reduce oxidative damage to your scalp and promote hair growth.
There are many options, but this recipe uses:
- Castor oil – Used for detoxification in treatments such as castor oil packs. I have also used it to thicken/lengthen my hair and eyelashes. Not only does it help with hair loss, it also greatly promotes hair growth. After using it twice a week, my hair grew 1.5 inches in just one month!
- Black seed oil – Black seed oil has many benefits, but it is especially good for hair growth. It can help treat some fungal infections that lead to hair loss, and it can also help prevent hair from thinning in the first place. It can be used internally or topically, and you just need to test a small amount on the skin inside your arm before using it on a larger area. Black seed oil can be irritating to some people.
- Rosemary Oil – Rosemary is well known for its ability to stimulate hair growth and is often added to hair growth treatments. And shampoo. Adding a small amount will add a pleasant scent and increase the effectiveness of the recipe by reducing inflammation and dandruff.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Also good for skin health and hair growth. The scent of black cumin seeds and rosemary softens the scent, creating a refreshing scent.
Tea tree and peppermint oils are also helpful, but I personally haven’t used them in my recipes. If you have dandruff, oily scalp, or fungal issues, you can add a few drops of tea tree if you like. Peppermint stimulates the scalp and increases blood flow for hair growth.
Optional olive oil and cayenne oil
Cayenne promotes blood circulation and is a folk remedy for hair loss and muscle pain. If you want to add it to your hair growth oil, it is easy to infuse. All you need is:
- Place the ingredients on a double burner and simmer for about 1 hour.
- You can also make a sun infusion. Simply place the cayenne and oil in a glass jar and leave it in the sun for a few days.
- Strain the cayenne pepper and reserve the remaining oil to use in your hair growth oil recipe.
Natural Hair Growth Oil Recipe
A combination of oils that promote hair growth, including castor oil, black cumin seed, rosemary, and lavender.
Produce: 3 oz.
-
Place all ingredients in a dark glass bottle. You can use a brown dropper bottle, but I reuse a black cumin seed bottle. This bottle has a special micron glass that prevents the oil from going rancid for years.
-
After wetting your hair, massage 10 to 30 drops (or ½ to 1 teaspoon) into your scalp.
-
Leave on for 1 hour or overnight, then wash off. We recommend using it at night and sleeping with a towel on your pillow to avoid oil stains.
-
Use once a week or as needed to help promote hair growth.
Test the oil on a small area on the inside of your arm before using it on your entire scalp. If it causes a reaction or sensitivity, do not use it. Black cumin seed oil may irritate the skin of a small number of people with sensitive skin.
