New York Giants likely to sign quarterback after Drew Lock injury

New York Giants coach Brian Daboll said during a Zoom media session Friday that the team could potentially sign a quarterback this week if backup Drew Lock (hip) misses significant time.

Lock suffered a hip injury after being trampled to the turf by a Lions defender during Thursday’s 14-3 preseason win over the Detroit Lions.

Despite optimistic projections from Dodgers general manager Joe Schoen on Thursday, Lock’s absence now looks likely. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Rock may be out for “a short while” but will not require surgery for a bone bruise, according to reports.

The Giants have only three quarterbacks since releasing Nathan Rauch two weeks ago, who has since signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Giants’ next preseason game is next Saturday in Houston against the Texans, and first-team players are expected to be in action in that game.

Meanwhile, Daboll liked the performance of his young running backs in the win over Detroit, where the Giants rushed for 155 yards on an average of 5.7 yards per attempt.

The Giants will rest on Saturday and resume training camp practices on Sunday.
