Jordan Thompson had a memorable year that included his first ATP singles title and his first major trophy in doubles, finishing in the top 30 in singles and ranked number three in the world in doubles.

Year under review

Thompson remains one of Australia’s most reliable and versatile players, with outstanding performances in both singles and doubles throughout 2024.

In singles, Thompson had his best season, finishing in the top 30 and winning his first ATP singles title in Los Cabos.

He was ranked 26th in the world last month after reaching nine tour-level quarterfinals in 2024. Aside from the Los Cabos title, his most notable performances were reaching the finals in Atlanta, the semifinals of the Queen’s 500 and the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters. – Best performance in the Masters 1000 tournament.

He has 35 match wins in 2024, including four against top-10 opponents. It was his biggest win against world No. 6 Alexander Zverev in the Los Cabos semifinals, and his 10th win against a top 20 finisher.

The 30-year-old also won the US Open title, reached the Wimbledon final with fellow Australian Max Purcell and reached a career-high of world number three in doubles by winning the Madrid Masters with Sebastian Korda.

Thompson and Purcell capped the year by advancing to an elite eight-team field at the ATP Finals, where they advanced to the semifinals.

Newcomb Medal History

This is Thompson’s third nomination for the Newcomb Medal, but first since 2017.

“It is a great honor for me to be nominated for the Newcomb Medal,” said Thompson.

“It’s been the best year of my career on both the singles and doubles courts. It means a lot to me to be recognized for this.”

The Newcombe Medal, the Australian Tennis Awards, will be held at the Palladium Ballroom in Melbourne on Monday 9 December.
