(Reuters) – A Russian drone strike in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil struck a residential building, killing one person and wounding several others, the Ternopil military administration said on Monday.
“Residential buildings were damaged,” Viacheslav Negoda, head of the Ternopil region military administration, said on his Telegram messaging channel. “Unfortunately there were casualties: one person was killed and one person was seriously injured.”
Sergiy Nadal, head of the Ternopil region’s defense headquarters, said on Telegram that the attack set fire to several apartments on the top floor of a five-story apartment building.
He said residents of several apartments had been evacuated and emergency services were working at the scene. Social media footage showed fireworks exploding from the windows of a multi-story apartment in the dark.
Reuters could not independently verify the report. There was no immediate comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny that Moscow has targeted civilians in its war, which includes a full-scale invasion in Ukraine in 2022.
The city of Ternopil and its surrounding areas were under air raid warning for two hours starting shortly after midnight on Monday, according to data provided by the Ukrainian Air Force.
On November 26, Russia’s largest drone attack on Ukraine knocked out power to much of the Ternopil region, whose administrative center is the city of Ternopil.
Ternopil and the surrounding area, about 220 kilometers east of NATO member Poland, had a population of more than 1 million before the Russian invasion in February 2022, which drove many Ukrainians west.
