Oral Care Routine (That Reversed My Cavities)

10 Min Read

Years ago, I shared my experience with remineralization of teeth. Since then, I have received hundreds of questions about my oral care routine. Although I do not actively treat cavities now, I still follow this routine to keep my teeth healthy.

If you are not familiar with the concept of remineralization, this article will cover the specifics of whether or not your teeth can be remineralized (yes, they can!). It may also be helpful to speak with your dentist about your body’s ability to remineralize your teeth.

Good oral hygiene helps prevent other problems such as cavities, bad breath, gingivitis, and even oral cancer. Dental health also has a direct impact on the overall health and well-being of the rest of our bodies. It can cause infertility problems, pregnancy complications, heart disease, and more. It’s important to take care of your mouth!

In addition to focusing on good dental care, I support a healthy mouth through diet and lifestyle. This podcast guest shares how oral health goes beyond brushing and flossing. Using natural oral care products (as opposed to conventional products) is also important for healthy teeth and dental hygiene.

My Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

This is the daily oral care routine I follow to keep my mouth healthy. It helped me remineralize my teeth years ago. I now use it to avoid new cavities. Taking care of your teeth is an important part of remineralizing your teeth and preventing decay.

morning

  • Oil pulling – As soon as I wake up, I do oil pulling with a few drops of coconut oil. Wellness Balanced Mouth Blend. Keep in your mouth for 15-20 minutes, spit it out in the trash, and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Do not swallow this oil. It will prevent oral bacteria from entering your body. This oil has really helped me remove plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Mouthwash – If you don’t have time for oil pulling, mix a few drops of Mouth Blend with water and use it as a mouthwash. It’s a great alternative to traditional mouthwash.
  • brush – After that, I brush with a homemade remineralizing paste or toothpaste. I also Wellness Bamboo Toothbrush With firm bristles. Dentists often recommend brushing your teeth daily with soft bristles, but I think firmer bristles clean the surface of your teeth better. Don’t have time to make your own toothpaste at home? Try this Wellness Whitening Toothpaste Contains hydroxyapatite, a mineral that makes up tooth enamel. It is fluoride-free and is a product I’ve been making myself for many years.
  • Supplements – I take vitamin K2-7 which helps transport calcium to the bones and teeth. I also take a magnesium supplement which is used for over 600 functions in the body. It’s really important for health!
  • Probiotics – Take probiotics in the morning to maintain a healthy gut and overall health. Also Wellness Oral Microbiome ProbioticIt helps balance the good and bad bacteria in your mouth.

afternoon

  • hydroxide – Our mouths need an alkaline pH to stay healthy. Drinking water causes us to produce more saliva, which keeps our pH more alkaline. 2013 study I’ve found that people with higher pH have more gingivitis than people with more alkaline pH. I drink half my body weight in filtered water.
  • Vitamin D – This is one of the most important vitamins for dental health, and the best way to increase your vitamin D is from sunlight. In addition to being outside for 10-15 minutes at sunrise and sunset, I aim to get 20-30 minutes of sun exposure midday.

dinner

  • floss – I use the Wellnesse Peppermint Silk Floss to remove all food particles and plaque. This helps prevent periodontal diseases such as gingivitis.
  • brush – After flossing, brush your teeth again. If you want to whiten your teeth, brush with activated charcoal a few times a week. It works wonders! You can also use: Wellness Charcoal ToothpasteI often use the base brushing technique.
  • Tongue scraping – This is a popular Ayurvedic practice. Literally scraping your tongue to remove bacteria! I do this once a day to remove buildup on my tongue and create a healthy mouth. Our Wellness Tongue Scraper Made of copper, which is antibacterial and durable.
  • Bedtime – My bedtime is between 10pm and 10:30pm, which allows for the most restorative sleep and optimal hormone production. I spray magnesium to improve my sleep. Having trouble sleeping? Check it out This useful hack To fall asleep.

Oral Health Diet

I try to eat a mix of healthy proteins, fats, and vegetables every day. Believe it or not, diet is a key factor in tooth remineralization.

It is important to get enough fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and minerals, so focus on healthy fats and vegetables. Collagen is a building block in our bodies, so it is important to get enough protein. Aim for 1 ounce of protein per pound of body weight (or ideal body weight). I like to use protein and collagen powders.

It is also important to limit phytic acid. Phytic acid is found in grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes. If you eat these, soak them in water to dehydrate them to reduce the amount of phytic acid.

Sample Diet

Here’s what I try to eat every day to get the amount of vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins I need to maintain oral health. After genetic testing, I learned that I have the FTO gene and that I feel better when I eat less saturated fat (but I still think I’m healthy!). The amount you need will vary from person to person, but healthy fats and animal proteins are still important.

  • 3-4 eggs with vegetables and meat or a collagen-based protein shake. Sometimes I also have a healthy coffee with added good fats for breakfast.
  • Eat healthy proteins like grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, and wild-caught salmon at every meal.
  • 2 cups of homemade broth for lunch and dinner (don’t have time to make homemade broth? This is my favorite organic, grass-fed broth.)
  • 4-6 cups of vegetables, usually with soup or meat. I’ll add a lot of leafy greens and brightly colored vegetables.
  • 2-4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2+ tablespoons grass-fed butter
  • Coconut-based snacks such as coconut cream
  • Other healthy fats like avocado, cooking tallow, and olive oil for salads

Differences Between Natural Oral Care Products

Conventional oral care products are full of harmful chemicals like fluoride, BPA, sodium lauryl sulfate, and phthalates. I also only use natural products for my teeth and gums. This has made a huge difference for me personally. After switching to natural oral care products, I realized that something in the conventional products was causing my gum irritation that I have had since I had braces as a teenager.

If you want to try the DIY route, I have created many great recipes over the years. In addition to the ones listed above, I have a natural toothpaste recipe and a squeezable recipe. And I have a DIY herbal mouthwash recipe.
