Pakistan cricketer retires day after captain Babar Azam steps down

Usman, son of the legendary Abdul Qadir, recently played for the Dolphins in the Champions One-Day Cup and made his decision official on Thursday via his Official X (formerly Twitter) account. .

The 31-year-old shared his decision to step away from cricket in an emotional message posted on social media, expressing his pride in representing his country at the highest level.

Qadir also thanked his teammates, coaches and fans for their support throughout his career.

In a note posted on his X handle, Usman Qadir said: “Today I would like to announce my retirement from Pakistan cricket, look back on this incredible journey and express my heartfelt gratitude. It has been a tremendous honor to represent my country, and I am grateful to my coaches and teammates who have been with me every step of the way.”

Looking back on the memories and challenges he faced throughout his career, the leg-spinner said this chapter of his life has left an indelible mark on him.

He added: “From unforgettable victories to the challenges we faced together, every moment has shaped my career and enriched my life. I am deeply grateful to my passionate fans who always stand by my side. “Your unwavering support has meant the world.”

However, Usman emphasized that although he has bid farewell to his international career with the Men in Green, he will continue his father’s legacy as he begins a new chapter in his cricketing journey.

Usman concluded by saying: “As I enter this new chapter, I will continue my father’s legacy while embracing both my love for cricket and the lessons he instilled in me. I have the spirit of Pakistan cricket and the precious memories we have made together. Thank you for everything.”

Notably, Usman is the son of Pakistan’s legendary late leg-spinner Abdul Qadir. He represented the Men in Green in 25 T20Is and scalped 31 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95. He has also played a single ODI for the Men in Green and picked just one wicket against South Africa in 2021.

His last appearance for the Men in Green came against Bangladesh in a T20I match in 2023. Usman has been putting up huge numbers in white-ball cricket, taking 68 wickets in 49 List-A matches and 112 wickets in 107 T20 matches. He also played 13 first-class matches and scalped 21 wickets.

Usman Qadir alleged Mohammad Hafiz’s role in Pakistan’s accusation.

In May 2024, Qadir made headlines by criticizing former PCB technical director Mohammad Hafiz for his exclusion from the Pakistan cricket team.

Usman revealed on a local YouTube channel that he had received assurances from former T20 captain Shaheen Afridi regarding selection for the New Zealand series in January, but Hafiz denied his selection.

Usman accused Hafeez of ruining his career, claiming that he had repeatedly overlooked him in selections. However, the former captain was also later kicked out from the position.
