Digital Substance Abuse Management Platform Pelago announced the launch of a network of inpatient Centers of Excellence focused on improving access to care, completing treatment and reducing costs.

Pelago will use a digital front door focused on substance abuse disorders (SUDs) to identify members in need of higher levels of care.

The company also uses a proprietary clinical investigation process to match members with the most appropriate inpatient facility and provide transitions to that facility. Upon discharge, the company provides ongoing support to ensure the success of the member’s treatment.

“Through appropriate clinical referral and care management pathways that ensure the right level of care, employers can increase rates of successful SUD treatment completion,” said Yusuf Sherwani, Ph.D., co-founder and CEO of Pelago. Get MobiHealthNews delivered to your inbox.

Pelago works with partners to increase in-network utilization through insurance plan coverage to address the high costs of out-of-network SUD admissions.

“The goal is to ensure that our members receive the right level of care at the right time, and if they need a higher level of care, we direct them to high-quality, pre-screened centers,” Sherwani said.

Pelago vets each network partner using an evaluation process to determine whether the organization can provide appropriate care. This includes passing proprietary outcome and performance assessments, meeting certain levels of certification, licensing, clinical outcomes, and achieving best practices for training, quality indicator reporting, and data sharing.

Pelago’s four assessment categories for network partners include treatment outcomes and performance measures, organizational accreditation and clinician qualifications, evidence-based treatment programs, data sharing, and technology commitment.

Pelago uses a Multidimensional Assessment (MDA) approach combined with Prioritization, Assessment, Triage and Classification (PACT) to streamline care pathways.

The assessment includes determination of SUD diagnosis and severity, suicide risk, current mental health, and physical health.

“Our white glove service in transporting members to the facility includes rapid access to care, access to Pelago’s concierge travel services, private and secure release of information and documents to the facility, and coordination of care with the patient’s primary care provider. .” said Sherwani.

He explained that Pelago uses this personal approach to understand its members and gather key details about the substances and stages of change they are struggling with.

“It helps create person-centered care plans and pathways to care, and continues to support members after discharge to prevent relapses and readmissions,” he said.
