Pickleback Shot – A Beautiful Mess

What is a Pickleback Shot?

The Pickleback Shot is a shot of Irish whiskey (you can also use American whiskey) followed immediately by a shot of pickle juice. This unexpected pairing is delicious and so much fun for parties! We also serve pickles as a garnish.

This recipe was officially developed by Bushwick Country Club bartender Reggie Cunningham in 2006. It’s been popular ever since!

ingredient

  • irish whiskey – Like Jameson. You can also use whatever whiskey you have on hand.
  • pickle juice – Straight from a jar of pickles!
  • pickle – Try using pickles as an optional garnish.

Recipe

To prepare this shot, start with two glasses. Pour a shot of Irish whiskey into the first glass. Pour one glass of pickle juice into the second glass. You can also add pickles as an optional garnish (I used cocktail sticks to add them).

To serve, start with a shot of whiskey and follow with a shot of pickle juice.

Crafting Tips

  • whiskey selection – The preferred spirit for this shot is Jameson Irish Whiskey. You can use any whiskey you have on hand, including American whiskey like Jack Daniel’s, but Irish whiskey is best!
  • pickle juice – The brine in a jar of pickles does the job. If you want something fancy, the best pickle brand we recommend is McClure’s.
  • suits well – Many people enjoy a beer after a pickleback shot. It is considered an ideal pairing. Start your night off with these fun shots, then switch to beer.
