Pink Squirrel Cocktail – A Beautiful Mess

MONews
7 Min Read

You will love this creamy, cherry-flavored cocktail! It reminds me of a cherry version of Grasshopper. One of the best dessert cocktails I have ever tried. The name Pink Squirrel comes from its pink color.

The Pink Squirrel cocktail recipe was created by Bryant Sharp at Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1940s. Want to learn how to make a Pink Squirrel?

Pink Squirrel Cocktail – A Beautiful Mess

ingredient

  • Crème de Noire – This almond-flavored liqueur is made from apricot, peach, or cherry seeds. It is similar to amaretto, and its red color gives it the pink hue of Pink Squirrel.
  • White Crème de Cacao – In this recipe, we use white (or clear) crème de cacao as we cannot use a darker color to achieve a pale pink color.
  • thick cream – Gives a very creamy finish to cocktails.
  • nutmeg – Fresh nutmeg is best. You can usually find whole nutmeg in the spice section of your grocery store.
  • Maraschino Cherry – Optional decoration.

Equipment required: Here are some of the best glassware options for this cocktail: Martini glass or Coupe glass. You will also need: cocktail shaker.

guideline

Add crème de noiret, white crème de cacao, and heavy cream to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Shake for 10 to 15 seconds until the shaker is completely cool.

Strain and pour into a coupe glass.

Garnish with maraschino cherries and a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.

Tips for making

  • Cream de Noio substitute – This ingredient can be hard to find. I had to order it myself because my local store didn’t carry it. You can substitute the crème de noir with amaretto. It will taste similar, but the pink color will be gone. To add some pink, you can use a drop of food coloring or half an ounce of pomegranate juice.
  • Decoration Ideas – Pink Squirrels are usually garnished with fresh nutmeg and maraschino cherries. Other fun ideas include a pink sprinkled rim, topping the drink with whipped cream, or topping the drink with a pink candy (or a cocktail skewer with multiple candies).
  • Pink Squirrel Milkshake – Turn the Pink Squirrel into a frozen cocktail! In a blender, combine 2 tablespoons of crème de noir, 2 tablespoons of white crème de cacao, and 2 cups of vanilla ice cream. Top with whipped cream, fresh nutmeg, and a maraschino cherry.
  • pink squirrel float – Pour 2 tablespoons of crème de noire and 2 tablespoons of white crème de cacao into a cocktail shaker and strain into a martini glass. Top with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Garnish with a sprinkling of fresh nutmeg and a cherry.
