Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced his rejection of Berlin’s decision to reinstate customs controls and checks at the German border.

“This decision is unacceptable from Poland’s point of view and effectively suspends the Schengen agreement,” Tusk told Polish diplomats on Tuesday.

“Poland needs help protecting the EU’s external borders, not controlling the Polish-German border,” he stressed.

He added that he would also call for urgent consultations within the European Union on the issue with other countries affected by Germany’s decision.

Germany’s Interior Ministry announced on Monday that it was temporarily imposing controls and inspections at borders across the country as part of efforts to combat illegal immigration and terror threats.

This comes in the wake of a stabbing attack on a large celebration in the western German city of Solingen on August 23. The attack was carried out by a Syrian extremist who has been living in Germany since 2022 and supports the terrorist group ISIS, who has sought asylum in Germany. The attack left three people dead and eight injured.
