Quebec City | Huron-Wendat, Wabanaki, Innu, Atikamekw and Wolastoqey People, February 19, 2025 -The fossil fuel transportation project, including the pipeline, is not a way to move forward according to 100 civil society organizations and stakeholders. Many have proposed a new project in light of trade and economic conflict with the United States. Civil society organizations stress that social ecological transformation is needed to ensure Quebec’s economic prosperity and fight climate change.
At the press conference, they were described in the recent discussions of “Mirages” and “Political and Media Bubble” to resume fossil fuel transport projects in Quebec’s territory.
“These types of projects, whether GNL Québec or énergie EST, have already been old when they were rejected in 2015 and 2021. Imagine now! The demand for fossil gas in Europe is decreasing and there is no investor. Even if this project begins in a few years, energy conversion will continue, and we will end with unnecessary and expensive infrastructure. ” Said the signer.
“Quebec does not need to compromise the integrity of the territory, the environmental and the health of the residents so that the oil and gas industry can sell hydrocarbons to deal with temporary economic problems. In Quebec, we proudly accepted ecological shifts, clean energy production and tomorrow’s economy. We will not go back. ” They added.
There is no possibility of social acceptance
In terms of social acceptance, the group recalled the long history of the Quebec’s population of the fossil fuel industry for the past 15 years, and in 2022, the battle has adopted a law on exploitation and exploration of the resources.
Due to the victory of citizens, the claims over Quebec’s energy security have always been used to sell unacceptable projects to the population.
“People are afraid of energy security, but in reality, most of Quebec’s oil is from western Canada, and the demand for natural gas is decreasing in Europe, especially in Germany. These fossil infrastructure projects are not just an environmental goal, but not only for potential customers. ” Signing organizations and experts said.
The crisis does not take a break
Finally, these organizations want to emphasize that the current crisis with the United States is a major and causes anxiety and fear among the Quebec families. It must be solved. But this crisis should not forget the more fundamental crisis that already affects us in terms of society, climate and biodiversity.
The risk of potentially comeback projects is the same as when you are rejected. Risk of accidents and leaks, threats to whale population, risk of animal groups and plants of St. Lawrence, and serious problems related to human health.
“The environment crisis will not take a break because US President Donald Trump feels shaken. We cannot face one crisis by ignoring other crises. The best way to face them is to accept ecological and social transitions. ” The signators concluded.
