Rafael Nadal played his first singles match since losing in the first round of the French Open in May, beating Leo Bori 6-3 6-4 in the first round of the Swedish Open.

Nadal, 38, missed Wimbledon this summer to focus on the Paris Olympics and made his comeback at the tournament in Bastard.

The Spaniard, who won his doubles match against Kasper Ruud on Monday, defeated his 21-year-old Swedish opponent, the son of tennis legend Bjorn Borg, with a drop shot in the fourth game.

Nadal won the first set by serving in the ninth game.

He broke Borg, ranked 461st in the world, in the first game of the second set and despite losing the first point while serving for the match, Nadal won the game to claim victory in one hour and 24 minutes.

“It feels great,” Nadal said. “It was a huge honour to play against the son of one of the greatest legends in the history of our sport.

“He did pretty well. He has a future ahead of him, so I wish him all the best.”

Nadal will next play Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the second round.
