Manchester City midfielder Rodri has won the coveted Ballon d’Or award, becoming the first Premier League player to do so since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008. Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the second year in a row, creating a dramatic scene at this year’s awards ceremony. The Real Madrid delegation was noticeably absent, opting to boycott Vinicius Jr. knowing he would not take home the Ballon d’Or. trophy.

Rodri’s journey to Ballon d’Or glory

Rodri’s path to the Ballon d’Or is a story of determination, perseverance and grace. Despite suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury against Arsenal last September, his impact during the 2023-24 season has been undeniable. He won his fourth Premier League title with Manchester City and lifted the Euro 2024 trophy with Spain. Additionally, he was named the best player of the Euros tournament despite having to leave the final match early due to injury.

What is one of the statistics that stands out the most? Rodri went on a 74-match unbeaten run across club and domestic competitions, which ended only in last season’s FA Cup final against Manchester United. Not bad for a defensive midfielder, right?

Aitana Bonmati’s dominance continues

In the women’s category, Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati stood tall. She didn’t just win. She ruled. Bonmati shone in both La Liga F and the Women’s Champions League in Spain, helping Barcelona win their third title in four years. This back-to-back Ballon d’Or Feminine win underlines that she is one of the world’s best in women’s football.

Meanwhile, fellow Barcelona players Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo completed the top three, further cementing the club’s position in the women’s game.

Real Madrid’s absence and Vinicius Junior’s response

Real Madrid’s absence was loud. After their players missed out on top spots, the club decided not to attend the Paris awards ceremony. Vinicius Jr. later said, “I will do it 10 times if necessary.” “I’m not ready yet.” Real Madrid were named Men’s Club of the Year but made it clear they were being overlooked.

Highlights of another night

Along with Rodri and Bonmati, the event had several other stars in the spotlight.

  • copa trophy: Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal was presented with this award to an under-21 player after his outstanding performance, including becoming the youngest goalscorer in European Championship history.
  • Yashin Trophy: Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez, who plays for Aston Villa, was once again selected as the world’s best goalkeeper. His Copa America performances and consistent performances at Villa earned him this honour.

Rodri’s victory was groundbreaking as he became the first defensive midfielder to win the Ballon d’Or since 1956, but the evening also highlighted a new and lasting legacy in football.
