Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal took to social media to congratulate the Austrian on his retirement after Dominic Thiem lost at the Erste Bank Open on Tuesday.

“A great career is over,” Federer wrote on his Instagram Story. “Congratulations, Domi.”

Thiem has won five of the seven Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings against Federer. Their only championship clash came at the 2019 BNP Paribas Open, where the Austrian won his only ATP Masters 1000 title.

“No matter the surface, you always found a way to beat me with your thunderous backhand,” Federer wrote. “But more importantly, you did it with grace and sportsmanship.”

Nadal, who won the series 10-6 (Thiem has four wins on clay courts), also posted an Instagram story to share the same sentiments with many: “Danke Domi.”
