The Daniel Jones era is now officially over after the New York Giants released him on Friday.

Jones made a public statement on Thursday sounding like a man who knew he was on his way out, and reportedly held a meeting with the owner early Friday to request his release.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who played with Jones in New York, said he is still close with Jones and wishes the signal caller well moving forward, according to Tim McManus.

The Giants took Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 draft right before Eli Manning played his final game for him, and they hoped Jones would be the heir apparent and worthy heir to the Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist.

Jones had a decent rookie season, but hasn’t been able to replicate that type of production since.

In 10 games this season, he has thrown for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing just 63.3% of his pass attempts.

The Giants will move forward with North Jersey native Tommy DeVito, who replaced Jones last season after he suffered an ACL injury in Week 9.

They currently have the second-worst record in the NFL at 2-8, which has fans hoping that the organization will draft its next true franchise QB in the upcoming draft this spring.

But for now, Jones is a free agent, so it will be interesting to see how much interest he gets on the open market.
