Sebastian Korda Wins DC Open, First Win in 32 Years Since Father Petr

WASHINGTON — Sebastian Korda captured his second ATP Tour title Sunday night, completing a father-son feat at the Mubadala City DC Open.

Thirty-two years after his father Petr won the 1992 Sovran Bank Classic, the fourth-seeded Korda beat Italy’s 10th-seeded Flavio Covoli 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in a match delayed by rain.

They are the first father-son tandem to win the same ATP Tour event.

“We have a lot of history with this tournament,” Korda said at the trophy presentation. “Obviously, one of my biggest goals was to come here one day and win the tournament and put my name on the court. Now that I have the opportunity, it’s probably the most special moment of my career so far.”

The 24-year-old Korda, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, is the younger sister of golf stars Nelly and Jessica Korda. Her mother, Regina Rakhrtova, played on the WTA Tour.

“To say I’m proud is an understatement.” Jessica Korda said in a retweet: A video shows her brother lifting the trophy.

Korda is the first American to win the Washington event since Andy Roddick in 2007. Korda’s previous win on tour came in May 2021 at the Emilia-Romagna Open, an ATP 250 tournament.

When the new rankings are released on Monday, he will jump to a personal best of No. 18.
