MONews
2 Min Read

The current African Cup of Nations champions finished second in Group A. After losing 0-2 to the Netherlands in their opening match, the Teranga Lions secured their place in the second round with wins over Qatar and Ecuador.

Their star player Sadio Mane is out of the tournament due to injury, but they still managed to score five goals. These goals came from five different players, making them a threat all over the park.

Senegal needed a win in their last match against Ecuador and Chelsea secured the win thanks to a late goal from Koulibiay with 20 minutes to go. Aliou Cisse’s men had 14 shots on goal against the South Americans but only one of their three shots in the Targaret were on target.

Senegal won the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, as well as reaching the previous two finals, and will be a tough opponent for Gareth Southgate’s men on Sunday. Think of England’s tough encounter with another African side, Cameroon, in the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup.

In that game, David Platt scored his second goal in two games before Cameroon took a surprise lead with two goals. Gary Lineker’s two penalties, one in regulation time and the other in regulation time, sent England through to the semi-finals. We all know what happened there…

The winner on Sunday will face the winner of France vs. Argentina on Saturday 10th.Day december.
