Democrat Sheng Thao was elected mayor after incumbent Libby Schaff’s term expired on November 8, 2022.
On January 20, 2023, Sheng Thao was sworn in as mayor.
After the FBI raided Oakland Mayor Sheung Tao’s home Thursday, his former chief of staff said he thought the mayor should resign.
Renia Webb, the former mayor’s chief of staff and trusted advisor, speaks of the pay-to-play allegations despite the fact that the FBI has not linked Thao to any illegal activity.
For a year and four months, Webb was able to work closely with and have access to Thao that few people have. Webb served as Thao’s right-hand man, serving as chief of staff when Thao was a District 4 City Council member.
Webb said he volunteered and spent countless hours working on Thao’s 2022 mayoral campaign. She also said she led Thao’s transition team after he won the election.
“A lot of what has come to light now is why I resigned so soon after winning an election we fought so hard to win,” Webb said.
She said she was saddened rather than surprised by the raid on Thao’s home by FBI agents on Thursday.
“I wasn’t surprised. I was like, ‘Finally. The truth is finally coming out,” Webb recalled.
Webb accuses Thao’s boyfriend, Andre Jones, of masterminding and running the pay-per-view scheme during Thao’s mayoral campaign and after she won.
“I found out that her boyfriend, Andre, was promising people jobs in our administration and appointments to people on various boards and commissions.” Webb said. “I certainly believe from the mouths of those who spoke to me that they held the positions they were promised. I was also promised a board position. and [they would always say] Andre, you know what? They would say, ‘André promised me this.’”
According to Webb, Jones was in control and “calling the shots.” She said Thao followed his instructions.
“It’s sad. He’s forcing her to do her job and do her job that I don’t believe she would do otherwise. I really don’t,” Webb said.
Jones and Thao met while working for Rep. Rebecca Kaplan. Jones was Kaplan’s chief of staff and Thao was an intern.
“When I first spoke to Sheng, it was in that house that was raided. [on Thursday], Webb explained, people came to me as Andre had promised. “And her response to me was, ‘Just ignore Andre. You will earn close to 2 million won. Just ignore it.’ And it broke my heart. I looked at her and said, ‘I don’t care about money.’”
After Thao won the November election, Webb said he would resign on New Year’s Eve 2022. She said she complained about her pay-to-play allegations to the City Council and the Public Ethics Commission in early 2023.
She said the council ignored her complaints. The ethics committee sent a follow-up email requesting evidence, but Webb failed to produce any physical evidence, so her complaint went unheard.
No one is surprised. Thao, who is already facing a recall vote, is under great pressure from the latest raids. Even the Oakland branch of the NAACP, a prominent left-wing group, is calling for her resignation. This highlights her failure as a leader and her overall disgust with the way she handles her proceedings.
When conservatives say DEI means death to the integrity of our government, this is what they mean.
Maybe we should stop calling everyone a racist just because they’re not white and we don’t want thugs taking over the mayor’s office.
