When I decided to add 1,000 square feet to Malibu Beach House as part of renovation, I first imagined dividing it into another area. We expanded the first suite and added new bathrooms and wardrobes to expand the kitchen. That kind of thing. So our architect DougHe announced the first draft of his renovation plan “stateroom.“
At first glance, I saw a vast open concept kitchen with a fireplace at one end. My immediate reaction? Are we sure that it uses the space best? But when studying Doug’s vision, I realized that he was designed with a modern approach that prioritized our demands and personal values over traditional expectations.
For our family, it is our top priority to create a connection atmosphere and feel people welcome. And what is better way to foster that symbiosis than a spacious and open room designed for the meeting? I was more excited about the space and everything, taking pictures of inspiration and imagining family holidays and dinner with my friends.
Let’s take a look at the kitchen today before we plan. So we can see exactly why we start from the beginning.

Rendering

At first, there was a built -in banquet at one end of the room, but after seeing it in the rendering, we realized that it made the room feel too tight. So we removed it and instead, we had a small seating space near the fireplace, doubling it as a lounge space and a meal space for 2-4 people.

Totally open door wall
I think there must be one element in every house that makes a major statement. If the customer rarely remember the other, it is at least they are unforgettable. One special thing. In our beach project, the 30 -foot pocket door walls that open directly to the outside are undoubtedly the statement. One of the reasons we are attracted to southern California is the ability to spend 12 months from the outside, so one of our top priority is to create a natural flow between the room and the outside. Large kitchen island

Inspired by nature
As I shared Beach Post, we use natural elements of the entire house, such as stone, wood, linen and clay. This material brings organic warmth beyond grounding and era. When we improve the choice, these elements draw our decisions and naturally reveal the soil tones that come with them. The data to define the Great Room space is as follows.
For walls: Portola’s Roman Clay (Color TBD). I want to capture the shades and textures like clouds found in rendering. It’s too cream, but it’s not gray. As you get closer, you will work with the Portola team to find the right color (or combination) and sample some options.
In the case of the countertop: Caesar stone pottery AluminuS. I was attracted to a shade similar to concrete. I like interaction with natural trees. But I wanted the durability and function of the Caesarstone ceramics. The shade of Aluminous is “fresh cement, porous and slightly uneven light, neutral surface, and contrasts with a soft stone that adds fine gray grains and rock textures.”
floor : We are using The shade of the floor is the flooring “Ingrid“. These are a designed wooden floor with truly colorful natural aesthetics. The spacious board will bring warmth and eternal things to the space, and I like this matte finish.
For plumbing facilities: Untitable brass plumbing equipment Callista It was one of the first design choices I made in this space! This is a small detail that makes a big difference. I will feel the warmth and rust of optimistic brass to the kitchen, and I will feel it directly at home at WABI SABI, a sun bleached palette that imagines a house. We have two sinks in the kitchen and the two faucets One collection.
A fireplace that anchores the room
Since we do not add the “living room” designated in the house, we carved one end of the large room with a glass of wine and a good book. And there is no such thing as a fireplace where everyone drives away. Plus is a design element that provides clear differentiation between the “cooking” part of the room and the “comfortable” part of the room, even if it is not separated by the actual wall. We plan to place a round table surrounded by a low slum chair in front of the fire. It is an attractive place for a cozy dinner for the night’s night with children twice.
Drink station
I wanted to design more “lounge” on the Great Room (near the fireplace) in a way that flows with the kitchen, but still not felt. ~ kitchen. But since we traded for a huge kitchen window in most of the top cabinets (described in detail below), we needed all additional storage we could get. So I designated a wall that runs perpendicular to the fireplace as a bar and a drink station. We will have practical items such as wine storage, coffee makers, mugs and glass products. It also features more design forward elements such as vintage turntables and sculptures on the open shelves, so you don’t feel like some of the kitchen.
And finally… Kitchen window of my dream
As I mentioned, I dreamed of a kitchen window that flows the space with sunlight for a long time. And the 10 -foot width x 7 feet high windows are not only possible to enter the tone of natural light, but also fully operated to open the inner courtyard. On the outside, there will be a counter on the outside, which is perfect to deliver food to provide drinks and throw them into the grill.

One of the design decisions I’m still considering is what kind of trees will be planted outside this window. As a visual focus of this room, it is approaching the same level of thoughtfulness because it is as important as design elements as much as all interior works.
