Aiden Markram’s unbeaten 69 runs in the third ODI against Afghanistan helped South Africa avoid a series of clean sweeps with a seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in Sharjah. I’m pursuing a reasonable goal of 170.
,South Africa faltered briefly at 80-3, but recovered to win in 33 overs. Afghanistan had already secured a historic series victory after winning the first two matches, but despite Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 89 off 94 balls, they struggled with bat problems in this last match. Afghanistan were all out for 169 in 34 overs.
Markram’s innings assisted by Tony de ZorziIt ensured that South Africa easily reached its goal. Gurbaz was adjudged Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his outstanding performance throughout the series, scoring 194 runs.
South Africa will now focus on the white-ball series against Ireland, starting with the T20I in Abu Dhabi on September 27, while Afghanistan’s next assignment will be in Zimbabwe in December. Both captains, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Temba Bavuma, reflected positively on the team’s performance, with Shahidi acknowledging Afghanistan’s learning curve and Bavuma praising South Africa’s resilience and progress.
