MELBOURNE, Australia – Three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka was one of nine wildcard entries awarded Friday for the Australian Open in January.

Tennis Australia said Australians Tristan Schoolkate, Li Tu, James McCabe, Daria Saville, Ajla Tomljanovic, Emerson Jones, Talia Gibson and Maya Joint will join Wawrinka at Melbourne Park when the main draw begins on January 12.

He said more main draw wild cards and wild card entries for the qualifying tournament will be announced soon.

Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam singles title at the 2014 Australian Open, defeating the recently retired Rafael Nadal in four sets. Wawrinka rose to world No. 3 with that win, and later added major titles at the 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open.

The Swiss player, now 39, has battled injuries in recent years but last appeared in a major quarter-final in 2020 when he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the fifth time.

“I am very grateful to have received a wild card for the 2025 Australian Open,” Wawrinka said. “Melbourne has a really special place in my heart. It’s one of the biggest milestones of my career.”
