Suryakumar Yadav scored 53 off 28 balls before Jasprit Bumrah took blistering figures of 3/7 as India beat Afghanistan by 47 runs and kick-started their Super Eight campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Suryakumar put on 60 runs off just 37 balls with Hardik Pandya for the fifth wicket. Axar Patel smashed 12 runs off six balls to take India to a score of 181/8.

Earlier, Afghanistan’s bowlers did not allow India to get off to a strong start. Rohit Sharma took over as the starting batsman and was the first to bat.. Rohit was beaten by Fazalhaq Farooqi in the third over, after which Rashid Khan dismissed Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli after a powerplay. Kohli tried to play deep but was eventually holed out at long-off for a run-a-ball 24.

Suryakumar took over after Kohli’s dismissal and eventually found a steady partner in Pandya, who eventually fell to 32 off 24 in the 18th over. Then came the Indian bowlers as Bumrah dismissed both Afghanistan’s openers in his first two overs. India brought in an extra spinner in Kuldeep Yadav and the move paid dividends as the Afghanistan batsmen were starved for runs in the middle overs.

Afghanistan lost three wickets in the powerplay and the rest of the collapse came after the 10th over. Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets each. While Arshdeep gave away 36 runs, Bumrah gave away just 7 runs from his 4 overs, at a brilliant economy of 1.75.
