World number 51 Nuno Borges won the Swedish Open in Bastadt with a 6-3 6-2 win over Rafael Nadal.
Spain’s Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, suffered a crushing defeat in his first final since 2022.
The 38-year-old, who has struggled with injuries in recent years and has fallen to 261 in the rankings, has decided not to compete at Wimbledon this summer to prioritise the Olympics.
Portugal’s Borges, making his debut in Nadal’s 131st ATP final, won the first set in 46 minutes before winning three games in a row in the second to seal the victory.
“It was crazy. I know we all wanted Rafa to win. I wanted that too. But something bigger inside me really pushed me today,” said the 27-year-old.
“I’ve been looking forward to this moment for quite some time.
“Overall, I’m really happy. I don’t know what to say. I’m so emotional.”
The Olympic tennis tournament begins in Paris on July 27.
Nadal said playing at Roland Garros, where he has won 14 French Open titles, was his “main goal” for the year.
