The star of Wednesday night’s Democratic National Convention who went unnoticed was Gov. Gus, Gretchen and Tim Walz’s 17-year-old son, who couldn’t hold back his tears, joy and pride at seeing his father on the national stage.
“Hope, Gus, Gwen, you are my whole world and I love you,” Walz said in his speech after talking about the years of fertility treatments he and Gwen went through to have a child. That’s when Gus stood up and shouted to the entire convention center and everyone watching, “That’s my dad!”
The Walls couple opened up about their family in People magazine. interviewAnd specifically about Gus. Gus is a young man whose parents say his condition is a “secret power.” He has nonverbal learning disability, ADHD, and an anxiety disorder.
“Like many American families, it took us a while to figure out how to do everything we could to help Gus succeed as he grew up,” the couple told People.
“It took time, but what became immediately clear to us was that Gus’ condition was not a setback,” they added. They described Gus as “outstanding, very aware of details that many of us overlook, and most of all, a wonderful son and brother to his siblings.”
The Walz family’s values were evident in that interview as well. Wednesday night In Tim Walls’ speech, he brought the simple and beautiful message that “everyone belongs” to the national debate, and for him, it clearly starts at home.
