When I do that, I imagine a pot of velvety, rich, warm chocolate swirling around with delicious treats like berries and slices of cake. That’s right – fondue. Is there anything more decadent than chocolate fondue on a cold winter night? It’s almost like being able to go to heaven. Adding caramel will get it a little closer.

This time I’m thinking of a more sophisticated fondue. It’s a little more adult. What could be more fantastic than combining Marsala and chocolate? Marsala, a Sicilian fortified wine with a rich hazelnut flavor, is commonly added to dishes with nuts and caramel sauces. To this fondue we add a few splashes. Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine. This rich and dreamy fondue is the perfect dessert to share! Made with just four ingredients, we guarantee you and your guests won’t be able to put down your fondue forks.

  • 12 oz. dark or semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • (1) 12 ounces Bottle Caramel Topping (found near ice cream toppers)
  • 2 tablespoon Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine
  • banana slices
  • Various berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries)
  • orange slices
  • marshmallow
  • cube Pound cake or brownie
  • pretzels
  • vanilla wafer

  • Place cream and chocolate in a small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the chocolate is completely melted (about 3 to 4 minutes).
  • Add the caramel topping and Holland House Marsala cooking wine and stir gently. Stir constantly to ensure the fondue is heated through.

  • Remove the pot from the heat and transfer the fondue to the fondue pot to keep warm. If you don’t have a fondue pot, pour it into a warmed bowl.

  • Serve it on a plate with sweet and savory treats! We love strawberries, blueberries, banana slices, pretzels, pound cake, and marshmallows. Use your imagination and have fun!

  • Place chocolate and cream in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 30 second intervals. (Stir until all the chocolate is melted. Be careful not to burn the chocolate. Once melted, add the caramel topping and Marsala cooking wine. Transfer to a fondue pot, mini slow cooker, or warm bowl. Serve as suggested above.

Note: You can find both caramel sauce and caramel topping at the grocery store. The “topping” is thicker for ice cream. That’s exactly what you want for this recipe. As long as you can find the caramel sauce, your fondue will still taste amazing! Reduce the amount of cream by just 1/2 cup at the beginning of the recipe. After adding all the ingredients, you can add the remaining cream a little at a time until you get the right consistency. It should be pretty and thick. It’s not a runny nose.
