The Commanders brought in Riley Patterson to create competition at kicker.

Coach Dan Quinn has emphasized competition in nearly every aspect of Commanders training camp, and now that extends to kickers.

Washington acquired Riley Patterson via waivers from Jacksonville on Wednesday, giving the team another kicker to its 90-man camp roster along with Ramiz Ahmed.

Patterson, 24, signed with the Minnesota Vikings after going undrafted out of Memphis in 2021 and was later signed by the New England Patriots’ practice squad. The Detroit Lions picked him up midway through the 2021 season, and Patterson made his NFL debut against the Chicago Bears, scoring two more points in a close loss. In Week 15, Patterson earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after hitting three field goals and three extra points against the Arizona Cardinals.

Patterson made all 16 of his extra point attempts during his rookie season, and only one of his 14 field goal attempts was over 55 yards.

He was acquired from Jacksonville in 2022 and started all 17 games, earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors (four field goals, one extra point) in a win over the New York Jets. He later kicked the game-winning field goal in the wild-card round of the playoffs against the Los Angeles Chargers, the third-largest upset in playoff history.

Coincidentally, Patterson was replaced in Jacksonville by Brandon McManus, who Washington signed in March but released after three months following a sexual assault allegation while with the Jaguars.

Patterson spent last season with Detroit and Cleveland, signed a reserve/future contract in February and was released by the Jaguars this week.

Washington signed Ahmed in June, but could bring in another kicker to compete for the job. Ahmed looked solid early in training camp, but struggled to make field goals from 50 yards or more.

“Yeah, I think almost half the league has two guys in that space,” Quinn said last week. “But that position and the other positions are still part of the competition.”

The Commanders also re-signed 30-year-old wide receiver Byron Pringle on Wednesday and cut 2021 seventh-round picks Dax Milne and Damier Byrd from the receivers.

Pringle joined the Commanders in the summer of 2023 and appeared in all 17 games, catching 14 of 22 targets and rushing for 161 yards (11.5 yards per reception).

At 30, he joins a position group that includes Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and third-round rookie Luke McCaffrey competing for at least a few roster spots.
