At least 31 people have been killed and 100 wounded after renewed Rapid Support Forces attacks on the southeastern Sudanese city of Senar, a human rights group said.

Emergency Lawyers, a group that monitors killings of civilians and other human rights abuses, said RSF had targeted several areas of the city, including the main market, with artillery.

The advance of the Rapid Support Forces, which already controls most of Sennar province, has slowed in the southeastern region as heavy rains have made movement difficult.

The emergency lawyers group said the army carried out airstrikes on the village of al-Souqi near Senar, killing at least four people. The Rapid Support Forces also killed one person and wounded 17 in an artillery attack on the village of al-Obeid, another area they are trying to retake.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a war that has killed about 18,800 people and displaced nearly 10 million people, according to the United Nations.

There are growing international and U.N. calls for an end to the war in Sudan to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan that has led to famine and death for millions of people due to food shortages caused by the civil war that has spread to 13 of 18 states.
