The Jets’ kicking story is about to open another chapter.

They released Riley Patterson and signed Anders Carlson to the practice squad on Friday, and Greg Zuerlein’s presence on injured reserve means either Carlson or Spencer Shrader (also on the practice squad) will kick when the Jets face the Cardinals on Sunday.

Patterson won the six-man kicking contest last week thanks to Zuerlein’s struggles and earned all three extra points during the Jets’ Week 9 win. He did not attempt a field goal.

However, Carlson did not participate in the original trial.

The former Packer and 2023 sixth-round pick landed in San Francisco in early October and played in two games, splitting time between the 49ers’ practice squad and active roster as a replacement for injured kicker Jake Moody.

Carlson made all four of his field goals from at least 40 yards and three of his four extra point attempts.

But San Francisco released Carlson, the brother of Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson, on Tuesday, and Moody was expected to return.

As a rookie in Green Bay, he went 27-for-33 on field goals and also missed 5 of 39 extra points, and those struggles prompted the Packers to make changes before the start of the 2024 season.

The Jets also signed defensive lineman Bruce Hector to the active roster, who had four tackles on a practice squad lift during a Week 3 win over the Patriots.
