Two of Cheryl Reeve’s top lieutenants will leave the Lynx to pursue other opportunities, the team announced Monday.

General manager Claire Duwelius will serve as head coach and executive vice president of Unrivaled, a basketball league founded by Lynx forward Napheesa Collier and Liberty forward Breanna Stewart. This league is scheduled to start in January.

Duwelius has been with Minnesota’s WNBA franchise since 2014 and was named the team’s general manager in 2022, working with Reeve to build the Lynx’s roster.

“Clare has worked tirelessly to support Lynx players and staff,” Reeve said in a statement. “We will miss her and we wish her well as she begins her new journey.”

Coach Katie Smith is also leaving to take the same position at her alma mater, Ohio State. The former Lynx star rejoined the organization as an assistant coach in 2020 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2022.

“Katie has been an integral part of the Lynx since her return in 2020,” Reeve said in a statement. “She has poured her heart and soul into developing the Lynx team and players into championship contenders once again.” “Her passion, dedication and loyalty have left an indelible mark on the organization. Although she is embarking on a new adventure with the Buckeyes, Katie will always be a Lynx and we wish her the best in her new role.”
