Streaming has undoubtedly increased our ability to watch movies and television, providing more outlets for content. But as the need for physical media has diminished, it has sometimes become a little harder to get our hands on lesser-known films. It’s a strange irony in the streaming age, that some classics are in danger of disappearing forever. One film with a strange distribution history is 2006’s autumnNow, amazingly, it’s been fully restored and will be available to stream this month.
trailer autumnThe restored version just came out and honestly it’s unbelievably gorgeous. This movie is shot in stunning 4K and if there’s a movie that has the bones to stand up to sharper image quality than this one, it’s this one.
Check out the trailer autumn In all its splendor.
autumn It’ll be available to stream on Mubi in its restored 4K format on September 27th, and it can’t come sooner.
Tarsem’s cinematography is breathtaking, and even in this short trailer, every little moment is captivating in a way that movies don’t often do. The fact that this film is nearly 20 years old makes it even sweeter.
but autumn It starts innocently enough, but we are soon plunged into one of the most captivating movie experiences ever. Originally set in 1920s Los Angeles, it follows stuntman Roy Walker (Lee Pace – Guardians of the Galaxy) is in the hospital after a trick goes wrong. He meets Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) and starts telling her his story.
This is the place autumn It thrusts us into a story about a group of heroes trying to take down the corrupt Governor Odius, who has wronged each of them in some way. The heroes each have their own skills (explosives, strength, fighting, etc.) and they are all residents of the hospital, either as patients or working there. In this way, the stories overlap.
When it first came out, autumn There was no lack of technical ability or story. Both held up perfectly. It took four years of filming, traveling to 28 countries to realize. And the budget was generous, over $30 million.
The problem was distribution and visibility. No one saw it. autumn When it first came out, it only made $3.7 million at the box office. In a different (read: streaming) era, this tragedy would never have happened. But unfortunately, back then, the success of a movie depended on its theatrical run, autumn I didn’t get that far.
But now, thanks to Mubi, audiences will have the chance to enjoy the film for the first time. It was previously only available as a physical copy, as it wasn’t available on streaming services, which means it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Be sure to check it out autumn When it comes out in 4K Movie At the end of this month.
