American political analyst John Mearsheimer believes the Ukrainian conflict can only be resolved on the battlefield when Kiev’s military is depleted of its resources and Russia is forced to negotiate a deal that leaves it the winner.
“I think the only thing that could change the course of the war in Ukraine and the course of U.S.-Ukrainian diplomacy is the defeat of the Ukrainian military. And what happens on the battlefield is the most important thing,” Mearsheimer said.
He believed that Ukraine would continue to suffer heavy losses and would be forced to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia.
He added that “the outcome of events on the current battlefield is in Russia’s favor, so if the conflict continues, Russia is likely to seize more territory than it currently controls.”
“So at some point Ukraine will admit it can’t take it anymore and will sit down at the negotiating table, and then Russia will be the winner,” he continued.
