Strasbourg Christmas Market 2024: From November 27 to December 27, 2024.
They don’t call it Capital de Noël (Capital of Christmas) for nothing. Strasbourg’s Christmas markets are world-famous, and the giant Christmas tree in the town square may bring a tear to your eye. France’s Alsace region may be one of the most beautiful places in Europe, but at Christmas, Strasbourg reigns supreme. I’ve put together a list of things to do in Strasbourg, France at Christmas that will surely be one of the most memorable and magical things to do.
Strasbourg is located on the border between France and Germany, and has actually changed hands several times over the years. Although it is now a French city, it still has a lot of German influence. Don’t be surprised to hear German spoken as you pass by the Christmas stands. How to get to Strasbourg It’s easy because it has the second largest train station after Paris. You can also fly into Karlsruhe Airport, Germany, about 45 minutes away. I often drive or take a bus from Heidelberg, Germany, which is about an hour away.

Strasbourg has more than one, two, or even seven Christmas markets. There are 10. It’s completely unnecessary in a city this size, but it’s the best possible solution. The city’s streets are decorated with lights, garlands and decorations. It’s easy to walk around the city to see all the markets in a day or two. Christmas markets usually start in the last week of November (22nd) and end on Christmas Eve (24th December).
Strasbourg Christmas Market dates 2024 are from November 27 to December 27, 2024. There are a few markets that are still open after Christmas.
Of course, there are many Christmas markets around the world, especially in Germany, but the Strasbourg Christmas Market seems to sparkle even more. The market represents a time in the past when families came together to celebrate, enjoy and share. The presence of a Christmas market here is unique and reflects the fact that Germany once ruled the area.
The Christmas market tradition is a German one, so it’s special that this tradition still survives in France. You will discover the most famous ones. Christkindelsmerik Founded in 1570, Place Broglie is one of the oldest markets in Europe.

In total, there are over 300 street vendors throughout the city, so you’re sure to find one as you stroll. At the bottom of this post you’ll find a list of all markets currently open.
Check out the cathedral
that Notre Dame Cathedral It’s one of the most magnificent structures I’ve ever seen. It was the tallest building in the world from the 15th to the 17th century. Maintaining that rank over that period means it is an architectural mastery and one of the best expressions of Gothic art. Go inside to see the beautiful structure up close and check out the astronomical clock. Don’t forget to climb the tower for views of the city.
Of course there is a Christmas market outside the cathedral and it is one of the most historic. Take a sip of mulled wine as the cathedral bells chime from time to time. It has over 100 chalets (shops or booths) offering Christmas decorations, sheepskins, mittens, hot drinks and delicious food.
Eat German – French Fusion
Strasbourg is definitely a great place for gastronomic purposes. There are also two Michelin three-star restaurants (Au Crocodile and Buerehiesel). Of course, the mix of German and French influences results in some very delicious food. one of my favorite things is Flamkuken Also known as tarte flambée. This is a very thin pizza topped with crème fraîche, finely chopped onions, and ham.
The intoxicating smell of sizzling onions will tempt anyone to try it. There are a variety of options and toppings so you can find something to suit your taste. A good place to check is Lancien Duan This place is famous for Alsatian cuisine.

Christmas tree viewing
What is it about the Christmas tree that instills a sense of childlike wonder in all of us? There is something magical about the combination of evergreens, lights and decorations that always fills me with joy. We decided that when it comes to Christmas trees in Strasbourg, the bigger the better. Reaching at least 30 meters in height, the tree towers over the square and is illuminated by 7 kilometers of twinkling light. Located on Place Kléber, it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and each year it features a different theme.
On weekend nights and closer to Christmas you can enjoy live music right next to the tree. There are also plenty of places to shop around and nearby the square in case you need Christmas gifts. Just watching the lights come on as the sky darkens makes you the star of the Strasbourg Christmas show.
Petite France
This is one of the most attractive areas to see in all of Europe. This is the historic district of Strasbourg, lined with half-timbered houses next to the river. Of course, it shines even brighter at Christmas. Walk along the canals, admire the 14th-century towers, stroll the cobblestone streets and browse traditional restaurants and shops. Don’t forget to stop by the Quartier des Tanneurs, one of Strasbourg’s best photo spots.
One of the best things about walking around Petite France is that it is so well preserved. Of course, a Christmas market is also held here. You truly feel like you have gone back in time. When the bridge shines and shines on the water, you can’t help but feel romantic.

Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie is the most famous.
Place de la Cathédrale – Strasbourg Cathedral Market.
Place a Kléber or “Giving Market” with a nice Christmas tree.
Place du Marché-aux-Poisson, terrasse du Palais rohan et rue rohan – Located outside the Palace Rohan and famous for its Christmas treats.
Place Benjamin-Zix is also known as the “Three Kings” market and is located in Petite France.
Place du Temple-Neuf opens in Carré d’or.
Place des Meuniers for smaller markets.
Gutenberg Square is often a place to showcase other countries and celebrate Christmas traditions.

Where to stay in Strasbourg?
Strasbourg is a relatively small city, so you really can’t go wrong staying here. However, I recommend staying in Grande Île, the historic center of the city. From here, all the Christmas markets are within walking distance. i suggest Hotel Gutenburg – Very good reviews and fair prices!
