Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell moved one step closer to reaching the Atlanta singles semifinals with comfortable straight-set victories at the ATP 250 event on Thursday.
In their first tournament since narrowly missing out on the Wimbledon doubles title, the duo had a disappointing singles performance at the All England Club but have turned things around with a strong showing on the US hard courts this week.
Fourth-seeded Thompson needed 85 minutes to win 6-2 7-5 against France’s former junior No. 1 Harold Mayotte.

The win over the 2020 Junior Australian Open champion, ranked world number 41, sets up a quarterfinal clash with fifth seed Alejandro Davidovic Fokina of Spain, who has beaten his opponent twice before.
This is his sixth quarterfinal appearance this year, five of which were on hard courts.
The winner will face either eighth seed Purcell or Jerry Shang, the 19-year-old Chinese who upset first seed Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals for the first time ever.
