It was announced this morning that former Ipswich Town striker Trevor Whymark has passed away at the age of 74.
Whymark spent ten years at Ipswich Town between 1969 and 1979. During his time at the club, Whymark scored four goals in a single match on three occasions, most notably in the home match against Lazio in the UEFA Cup.
Wymark, who joined from non-league side Dystown, scored an impressive 104 goals in 335 appearances for Suffolk, forming a formidable attacking partnership with Paul Mariner, who joined from Plymouth Argyle in 1976.
A serious knee injury in 1977 saw Whymark miss most of the season and he did not play any matches during the Portman Road club’s famous 1978 FA Cup run.
Derby County signed Whymark when he left Ipswich in 1979, but he played only twice. He joined Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps before returning to England and signing for Grimsby Town.
After four years at the Mariners, Whymark played for Southend United, Peterborough United and returned to his first club, Diss Town.
Wymark was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2019.
