Trump himself sabotaged his campaign’s criticism of his choice of Kamala Harris as vice president by claiming that the choice of running mate was not important.
Eli Stokols said on MSNBC that “Team Trump is looking at these people, looking at the files, trying to figure out who she’s going to pick. They’re ready to figure out who she’s going to pick. But I think former President Donald Trump said a while back that the vice presidential nomination doesn’t matter, because that’s the top of the ticket, and in some ways, former President Trump has already undercut the effort to target his campaign at whoever Harris picks, because he’s already gone out there and said that part of the campaign doesn’t matter.”

Here’s what Trump says about his vice presidential pick being unimportant:
Trump completely threw JD Vance under the bus and said the vice presidential pick was meaningless. “Historically, the vice president has had no influence in elections. It has virtually no influence.” pic.twitter.com/0rDkP2WmsR

Trump can’t think strategically or beyond himself. Trump chose Vance because he thought he would win the election and Vance would help score points with the Republican base.
Donald Trump never once considered whether JD Vance could become president if necessary.
Whatever criticisms the Trump campaign might level at Harris’s pick, Harris’s campaign could counter with the former president’s words.
Trump has no strategy. We’ve reached the point in this campaign where Trump is losing and sabotaging himself.
Trump laid the groundwork for Kamala Harris and the Democrats while trying to excuse his poor running mate choice.
