The United Nations, February 14 (IPS) -The new report from the UN Human Rights Office has adjusted human rights violations against civilians to curb protests in July last year in July last year. It turned out to be committed. Serious reform to end the cycle of violence and retaliation.
From February 12th and July 1 to 15, we published a long -awaited report on human rights violations and abuse during Bangladesh’s anti -government protests. 2024. This report is the result of the fact -finding mission conducted by the invitation of the Provisional Government and the best advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus in September.
The student -led movement began with protesting the decision of a high -level court in the country who decided to restore the unpopular equivalent system for public officials. When the high -ranking officials of the Seoul ruling Awami League withdrew their requests, the movement spread throughout the country and attracted the attention of the country. As students faced an increase in retaliation in Awami League and Security Forces, the protesters shifted the demands for wider government reforms and the resignation of all prime ministers. She fled to India on August 5, 2024 and expressed the end of her regime.
The report showed that Hasina’s government, security and information teams systematically participated in serious human rights violations. This included hundreds of judicial killings, the use of the protesters, including children, random detention and torture. OHCHR says that this infringement of human rights was carried out under the direction of overall knowledge and political leaders and security guards, intended to suppress protests.
Volker Türk, the United Nations Human Rights president, said, “The cruel reaction was a calculated and well -adjusted strategy to face the massive opposition by the whole government.”
According to the OHCHR survey, senior Awami League officials mobilized supporters and party’s student wings, CHHTRA LEAGUE, to carry out armed attacks to convince student protesters. When the protesters had a basis, the police were instructed to take more powerful action, and the government was prepared to deploy a semi -armed military armed with a military rifle.
The report has often confirmed the presence and use of metal pellets, rubber bullets and tear gases of non -armed protesters. Excessive power of protesters was used by police and soldiers who were criticized by human rights groups for the excessive use of police and soldiers, especially violence and intimidation. During that period, 130 deaths were reviewed by Taka Medical School, and 80 %of them were caused by firearms. The Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Health, has more than 13,000 injuries, and many of them are long -term damage to their eyes and torso.
Women who participated in the protests faced linguistic abuse and physical attacks by police and Awami League. Girls were also threatened to convince them from being able to participate in protests due to sexual violence. OHCHR mentions at least two accounts for women who are physically assaulted and insulted by the Chitra League members before being handed over to the police. They mentioned that more cases may have occurred in the report, but may not have been reported.
OHCHR estimates that 1,400 deaths have occurred in relation to protests, and children account for about 12%of the death. This death was a minor student or bystander who participated in the protests and occurred among minor students who were deadly guns on a lost bullet.
This report also pays attention to the nation’s efforts to suppress information and hide the degree of anxiety. Journalists faced the threat of security forces. At the end of the protests, at least 200 journalists were injured and six were dead. On the other hand, the former government’s information and telecommunication agency implemented the Internet and telecommunications closure without providing legal justification. This was intended to prevent protests through social media and to prevent journalists, activists and the general public from sharing or approaching information on protests and government retaliation.
In the aftermath of Hashi’s departure, violence did not end. Instead, a multi -violence incident has been reported that the police, the Awami League supporter or the support is supported. In addition, a report on attacks on the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the indigenous community of a minority Hindu community appeared. There were 100 arrests associated with this attack, but many of the offenders still faced injustice.
OHCHR mentioned that the entire government’s crackdown on the protest movement formed a violation of international law. It is a symbol of deeper tendency to use threats and fatal power to prevent citizens and political activities.
This report is concluded with a series of recommendations to sweep reforms across the judicial and security sectors and fulfill a broad change in political system.
After the report was published, the Provisional Government said it would welcome the results and take measures to implement recommendations. Yunus said on Wednesday, “I am trying to shift Bangladesh into a country where everyone can live in security and dignity with everyone who works in the middle and millions of other Bangladesh.” Pointing out the report on the report on the structural issues in the law enforcement sector, Yunus said to the people in that sector, “We urged the definition, law and people of Bangladesh to consider their colleagues and laws and consider others. . It violated the human and citizenship of fellow citizens. ”
Türk said his office is ready to support Bangladesh during the national responsibility reform process. “The best way for Bangladesh is to face the terrible mistakes committed through the comprehensive process of sincere words, healing and responsibility during this period, and to solve the legacy of serious human rights violations and never get up again.”
The temporary government’s recognition of human rights reports will be welcomed. In the past, it was common for the former government to dismiss such reports. Healing and retaliation should be owed in the lost life during the protests. At the same time, this government and their representatives should also recognize that the efforts to pursue justice and responsibility should not be trapped by the traps of violence or the completely other leaders. A campaign for the Provisional Government and last year’s protest.
Meenakshi Gangury, deputy director of Human Rights Watch, warned the government that the government should not repeat the past mistakes. She said, “Bangladesh is deserved to be angry about the government’s oppression and deserves justice and responsibility, but it should be a way of committing rights.” “All crimes, including violence, should be punished, but when the power level is characterized as a ‘devil’, it can be abused by a security forces who have never faced responsibility.”
