UN launches polio vaccination campaign in Gaza

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) chief representative in the Gaza Strip said Israel had agreed to temporarily halt military operations in designated areas for the duration of the vaccine campaign.

The second polio vaccination campaign actually starts on September 1. It’s important to get to 90% coverage. We need to get to 90% or more to prevent outbreaks and transmission within Gaza and to prevent international spread. There is a preliminary commitment for regional humanitarian pauses during the campaign. So in the central region, three days, plus one day if needed, in the southern region, three days, plus one day if needed, in the northern region, three days. We will do the second dose within four weeks. Once we start this process, we have to finish it. So WHO, UNICEF partners, of course, assume that we will do that. We will definitely do the second dose.
