United Cup: Katie Boulter leads England to quarter-finals

Katie Boulter beat Australia’s Olivia Gadecki in straight sets to send England into the United Cup quarter-finals in Sydney.

Boulter knew that a straight win in one of the three rubbers against the hosts would see GB crowned Group F winners.

In the first tie, Boulter secured qualification by winning 6–2 6–1 in 70 minutes before Australia won the next two encounters.

Boulter’s fiancé Alex de Minaur defeated GB’s Billy Harris 6-2 6-1 and joined Gadecki in the mixed doubles with Charles Broom and Olivia Defeated Olivia Nicholls 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

England beat Argentina 2-1 in their opening match of the tournament on Tuesday, and although all three teams in the group finished on equal points, GB took the top spot by winning the most sets.

“I tried to avoid all the statistics about all this, but we had dinner together. [former British number one] Last night Laura Robson thankfully told me I should win in straight sets,” Boulter said.

“So I’ve been feeling the pressure since last night.”

Alexander Shevchenko helped Kazakhstan advance to the quarter-finals by beating defending champions Germany, who were missing world number two Alexander Zverev due to a bicep injury.

Poland also qualified, with Iga Swiatek defeating Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.
