Despite Joe Root’s impressive performances in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka and his double century in the second Test match at Lord’s, former England captain Michael Vaughan has sounded a stark warning about the difficulties he could face against Jasprit Bhumara and Pat Cummins in the upcoming fixture.
Vaughan sounds the alarm on Root
In his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan highlighted the potential impact Bumrah could have on Root’s performances in the five-match Test series next summer. “Jasprit Bumrah enjoys bowling to Root and could severely limit his output next summer,” he wrote, highlighting the Indian pacer’s ability to trouble the world’s No. 1 Test batsman.
Vaughan also pointed to Root’s difficulties against Australia captain Pat Cummins, particularly when Root failed to score a century in Australia. “The same thing happened with Pat Cummins in Australia, Root never scored a century,” he added.
Root’s importance to England’s line-up
Recognising Root’s importance to England’s batting line-up, Vaughan discussed the former captain’s impact on the team’s performance. Referring to England’s loss to Sri Lanka in the third Test at The Oval, he wrote, “This week has made me realise just how important Joe Root is to this line-up. His batting is key.”
Litton Das has revealed the team’s focus on adapting to the SG ball for the upcoming Tests.
Vaughan admitted that England’s “flashy players” can score fancy fifties but they rely heavily on the consistency of Root at No.4 to provide the foundation for big totals. “All the flashy players around him score fancy fifties, but when the glue at No.4 doesn’t make the huge runs he does, they get tired,” he added.
Root’s Impressive Records and Milestones
Joe Root is widely regarded as England’s greatest ever batsman, and holds a number of impressive records. He has scored the most centuries for England in Tests and ODIs, and is the highest run-scorer in international cricket, with 12,401 runs in Test cricket alone.
Root is also on the verge of becoming the first batsman in World Test Championship history to score 5,000 runs. He has now scored 4,973 runs from 58 matches and needs just 27 more runs to achieve the feat.
Root and the Future of England
With Root and England looking forward to the upcoming challenge of Bumrah, Cummins and other formidable opponents, the team will have to find a way to thrive even when their star batsman is not putting up big scores. “England have to find a way to thrive even when Root is not putting up big scores. Based on this game, they are not,” Vaughan warned.
The series against India and Australia will test England’s resilience and depth, with the team looking to back up Root’s outstanding performances with consistent performances from the rest of the line-up. Vaughan’s words of warning serve as a wake-up call for the team to address their weaknesses and develop strategies to overcome the challenges posed by world-class bowlers like Bumrah and Cummins.
