VIDEO: Mason Greenwood makes instant impact for Marseille as he scores twice on Ligue 1 debut – Man Utd News & Transfer News

Former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood got his career off to a good start for Marseille in fine style in their Ligue 1 opener against Brest.

Greenwood signed a permanent deal with Marseille earlier this summer, becoming the first signing from the area under Roberto De Gerbi, who also joined Marseille after leaving Brighton & Hove Albion.

United have agreed a deal with Marseille for the 22-year-old in a deal worth around £26.6 million (€31.6 million), with the striker signing a five-year contract.

The Red Devils also inserted a sizable buy-in clause into the deal, believed to be between 40 and 50 per cent.

Greenwood needed just three minutes to make his mark as Marseille’s goalkeeper, running superbly down the right flank and slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

28 minutes later, the Englishman scored his second goal and Marseille’s third, this time from the penalty spot.

De Zerbi started Greenwood on the right wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The 22-year-old’s two goals against Brest will no doubt give the striker plenty of confidence as he tries to adapt to his new life in France.

Since his move to Marseille, all eyes have been on him.

The player, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, faced opposition from some of the club’s fans and outsiders ahead of his move to the Stade Vélodrome.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan has been vehemently opposed to Greenwood’s arrival, repeatedly saying he “doesn’t want the club to be embarrassed by a man who beat his wife”.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault in October 2022, but denied any wrongdoing. He was also arrested on the same day for breaching his bail conditions. In February 2023, all charges against the Carrington Academy graduate were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service after a key witness withdrew.

He joined United at the age of nine and rose through the ranks, making his senior debut for the Red Devils in March 2019.
