Earlier in the day, Washington Sundar was in the spotlight with a career-best bowling performance as New Zealand were bowled out for 259. Playing his first match of the series, Sundar made an immediate impact, taking seven wickets for just 59 runs. His brilliant efforts, including dismissing five batsmen through clean bowling deliveries, threw the New Zealand line-up into disarray after a solid start for the top order.

Devon Conway (62) and Rachin Ravindra (56) stood out for the Kiwis providing resistance with well-composed half-centuries. but, Sundar’s incisive bowling turned the situation in India’s favour.Prevents New Zealand from leveraging the platform and tying it up for a modest sum.

Sundar, who was added to the squad ahead of the second Test, made up for his absence in the series opener and returned to the playing XI on fire. His spin, accuracy and ability to extract turns on Pune pitches proved too much for the visiting team, eclipsing the contributions of Conway and Ravindra.

India now face the challenge of chasing New Zealand’s total with sufficient batting depth, but a lot will depend on the partnership of Gill and Jaiswal against New Zealand’s rigorous bowling attack led by Southee.

Day 2 will be an exciting contest with India taking control of the match and New Zealand aiming to take advantage of the conditions to push India further into the top tier.
