Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted some of his players are “anxious” and “scared” ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.
United currently sit 14th in the Premier League standings, having lost five times in six games.
It doesn’t get any easier for them as their next assignment is away to table leaders Liverpool. “They feel anxious and sometimes afraid on the pitch,” Amorim said of his stars, who are banned from the media.
“We have to deal with it. We need leaders who will step up and help others. And I am the person most responsible for improving performance here.”
“You can see the players working hard. Sometimes they find it difficult to play football because they are too anxious and too scared because this is a difficult moment.”
“For two days we did the basics and did our job, focusing on our idea of playing football. It’s strange that the supporters are chanting my name because they are tired of this moment. I will give everything to help the club. “I know it’s hard to understand now, but we will succeed.”
Amorim joked that the pressures of managing United were affecting his once youthful appearance and demeanor.
He said, “You can tell by my face. You can compare the way I arrived with the way I am now!”
“Of course, there is a lot of pressure when you lose, but pride and performance are more important to me. It’s even harder when we’re not doing well. Because everything is explained to me when I arrive. “I explained that I expected this when you guys said we were in the top four after Everton.”
“It’s hard to deal with all the problems and bad grades and losses that are happening here. It’s really difficult. But I expect it to be really difficult. The only thing that can help me is training with the players. And now that my family is here too, things are a lot different. It could be helpful to me.”
In response to his previous comments that United were fighting to avoid relegation, Amorim stressed: “I know it’s problematic for a manager to say something like that here, but at this moment in our club, everyone has to understand.”
“Then let’s focus on reality. We know it’s Manchester United. I know I shouldn’t talk about these things. But I want to make it clear to the fans and players. “I think this moment is really important.”
“Anything can happen but we have to focus on winning games and improving our performance. Then, I don’t think (relegation) will be a problem in the future.”
He told reporters he was more interested in United’s progress than finding weaknesses in Liverpool’s form.
The Liverpool vs United match starts at 16:30 GMT.
